We serve the East Bay, primarily Berkeley, Kensington, Albany
and El Cerrito.
Berkeley is known throughout the world for its fine University. It also serves as a Mecca for intellectuals, artists, free spirits and just plain kooks. Yet somehow, it all comes together and works always vibrant, never boring. The housing stock runs the gamut from the adobe-and-beam structures of the first Spanish missionaries, through the romantic fantasies-in-wood of the 19th century settlers, to the revolutionary styles of the great architects in this century. Driving around town can be akin to an architectural seminar, with works on display by Bernard Maybeck, Julia Morgan, John Hudson Thomas, John Galen Howard and more.
Kensington is an unincorporated city in Contra Costa County with a Berkeley post office. Its narrow streets and old-world-style architecture combine with stunning views of San Francisco, the bay and three bridges to make it a special enclave. The community is avidly involved with its schools and local politics. At one point there was a move afoot to secede from the USA but they only went as far as voting to tax themselves to pay for their own police and fire departments.
Albany is a small community (one mile square) with a top rated independent school system that makes it highly sought after by parents of school age children. Most of the homes date from the 1920s. Its major developer was a man who came to be known as "One-More-Nail Macgregor (so called because he overbuilt, making his houses very sturdy). He built hundreds of bungalows in every conceivable stylistic mode using high quality craftsmanship. It is a safe town with a topflight police force whose response times are often under 90 seconds. |

El Cerrito developed mostly after WWII, is the least known treasure of the East Bay. Although it lacks the architectural diversity and pizzazz of Berkeley, Albany and Kensington, it is a solid, safe community with a friendly and diverse population. It's far more affordable than the other cities and the views of San Francisco, the bay and the bridges are more impressive because they are viewed at a better angle. We have lived here since 1971 and wouldnt consider moving anywhere else.
